Cotterill told his club’s official website: “We’ve asked Villa if we can extend Gary’s stay by one month, two months, or for the whole season.

“I would take him on a season-long loan because he has come in and done a terrific job for us.

“But that’s in Villa’s hands now and we will wait to hear back from them and listen to what Gary himself wants.”

Palace chairman slams Leeds United

Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has slammed Leeds United following the collapse of Shaun Derry’s move to Elland Road.

Jordan told the South London Press: “Shaun is not going on loan. Either somebody comes up with the right deal for him or he stays with us. Ipswich wanted him on loan and were pleading poverty, but if they are so poor, why didn’t they accept the £3 million they were offered for Darren Bent?

“As for Leeds, the way they messed Shaun about was a farce.

“They tried to change the deal three or four times and took the mickey out of Shaun by initially offering him wages that are well below what he deserves.

“It was an insult to Shaun so I phoned him and told him to come back straight away. Then they wanted him on loan and I agreed, as long as they could guarantee they’d make it a permanent deal. They couldn’t come up with that guarantee so the deal was off.”
