Rangers agree fee for Feyenoord forward

Rangers have followed Feyenoord in announcing that an undisclosed fee has been agreed for Belgian forward Thomas Buffel.

A Rangers spokeswoman said: “It’s more or less done, it’s just the personal terms to be agreed.”

Rangers manager Alex McLeish said: “I have seen Buffel a few times and he is an energetic, lively, quick player with great skill and he can bring something to Rangers, quite simply.

“I have seen him play for Belgium and also for Feyenoord. He’s scored a few goals over the past two or three years and is not in Ruud Gullit’s plans this season.

“He’s a good type, not what you’d call an up-front target man, but more a second striker, playing from middle-to-front. But he’s young and, if we get him, maybe we’ll keep him a bit longer. But he’s not here yet.”

Keegan looking to keep players

Manchester City manager Kevin Keegan has warned clubs that he’s not looking to sell his players.

Keegan told his club’s official website: “As a club we are vulnerable. People look at our situation and they know that I have not got any money to spend.

“So they think the only way I can buy is to sell the best players, but that is where they are wrong.

“I shall oppose any move for any of my players as I do not have enough players. There would have been a time when I would have looked at any deal in isolation but at this point in time why would I want to sell my best players.

“We have not got many of them anyway but if the Chairman and Board decide that they want to sell a player then there is nothing I can do about it.

“To lose the players that have been linked with moves would be a big blow for us.

“There is no reason why we should do it and I don’t want our supporters to be thinking that in anyway shape or form we are going to sell these players.

“It is other clubs who are trying to get the best of a situation for themselves and looking at our situation.”

As for buying players, the former England midfielder added: “If we are going to move in this transfer market it is not going to be in the next week or two.

“It will be towards the end of the window when other clubs have done their business.

“We may have to do as we did last year and go for someone on loan as we did with Daniel Van Buyten.

“Those situations are no going to arise in the opening weeks of the transfer window. We will not be first in but it does not mean to say that we will not do well out of it.”

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill is to open contract talks with veteran midfielder Neil Lennon in January. The 33-year-old is out of contract in the summer.

O’Neill said: “We will be discussing that in the first couple of days in January.

“He has a very open mind and if things are right then I’m sure that he would like to stay.

“But he is never far from the headlines and so he might have other things to think about.

“We will wait and see what happens when the agent speaks with us but I am very happy for him to stay.”

On contract talks with Welsh striker John Hartson, he added: “I was pretty pleased with the way things went and we’ll see what happens.

“I have never been over-confident until everything is signed and sealed but the discussions went very well.”
