Donovan returns to MLS

Bayer Leverkusen forward Landon Donovan has joined MLS club Los Angeles Galaxy. No details of the fee or contract were disclosed.

Galaxy President and General Manager Doug Hamilton said: “We are very pleased with today’s announcement as it marks another chapter in the Galaxy’s tradition of bringing exceptional players to our club over the last decade.

“Landon is a young player of great pedigree who has produced wonderful results for both club and country. We look forward to him enjoying a long and successful career in Galaxy gold.”

Donovan said: “My decision to return to MLS and be part of a growing dynasty of champions with the Los Angeles Galaxy is one that I have made with thoughtful consideration.

“MLS competition continues to vie for a place among the world’s leading leagues and can only continue to grow if the American player plies his trade here. For the last decade, MLS has seen internationals coming to the States to be part of this league and if we, as Americans, can’t contribute to our league, it’s a bit of a disservice in growing soccer here in the U.S. and making MLS as fierce as it can be. With every National Team call up of an MLS player, it only further proves that it’s not only ok to play professionally in our own backyard, but is an honor.”

Galaxy Head Coach Steve Sampson said: “We are very excited about adding a player of Landon’s stature and experience.

“He, combined with the players this club already has, will only add fortune to fortune. We welcome his arrival and look forward to working with him. I am sure he is going to be a very positive element on and off the field for the Los Angeles Galaxy.”

Spurs manager plays down Beckham reports

Following Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy’s failure to rule out a move for Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham, manager Martin Jol has played down the North London club making a move for the England captain.

Jol told Sky Sports News: “It’s all hypothetical, but we already have a couple of good players in that position.

“David Beckham is a star player and he’s playing for Real Madrid, so why should I think about that sort of thing?”

Aston Villa and Newcastle United have joined clubs interested in signing Liverpool defender Gregory Vignal. The Frenchman, who is currently on-loan with Rangers, recently saw a permanent deal with the Scottish giants fall through.

Vignal’s agent Philippe Flavier said: “He will probably not return to France.

“Gregory wants to stay in Scotland or England.

“We have heard that Newcastle and Aston Villa are interested and other clubs too, but I have not met with any English club.”

He added: “Nothing has changed [with Rangers] but everything is still open for Glasgow too.

“Okay, we did not find an agreement but the two parties like working together.”

Moore set for new Oldham deal

Oldham Athletic’s joint-owner Simon Corney has said that the club will be holding contract talks with manager Ronnie Moore ‘in a few weeks’.

Corney told the Oldham Evening Chronicle: “With Ronnie Moore on a short contract you are bound to get speculation about what will happen next.

“Although people are connecting us with a lot of different managers, we are pleased with the way things are going.

“I doubt anything concrete will happen before the team is safe from relegation, but we would like to sit down with Ronnie in the next couple of weeks.

“We would like the situation sorted because there are lots of players coming out of contract and we need to start planning for next year.”

Moore said: “Once you have started something and put the foundations down you would like to see the building erected.

“I am hoping to sit down soon with the owners, but it will be down to what they want.

“They brought [assistant-manager] John [Breckin] and myself in to help keep us up and we are well on the way to achieving that, though we still need four more points.

“I have enjoyed my time here and see no reason why I shouldn’t stay. There are good people in charge and they want to take the club in the right direction.”
