West Ham make Keane contact

West Ham United assistant-manager Peter Grant has revealed that the Upton Park club have been in touch with Roy Keane’s agents.

Grant said: “We have made the contact that we are interested. We would be delighted if someone like Roy Keane was available and interested in coming to West Ham.

“We definitely hope it could happen. We would love the opportunity to speak to him and if he gave us the nod he was interested we would be in there for sure.

“The decision comes down to Roy and where he wants to play his football. Does he want to move to London? Does he want to move abroad? Does he want to move to Scotland?

“If he says he wants to go to Glasgow then it is a waste of time pursuing it because there is only one team he is going to play for.

“But if Roy decides he wants to come to London – then bang, we’re in for him. There is no doubt about that.”

He added: “The one thing Roy has got is a winning mentality – and that is what we are striving for here.

“Alan [Pardew] spoke last week how highly we rate him and it would be fantastic to have him at this club. Someone like that would give the club a huge lift.

“People say things about his team spirit – but that comes down to the fact he wants to win games of football. I don’t find that a fault in anybody.

“That mentality comes from Sir Alex Ferguson – second place is first loser – and that is why he has been so successful in his career. Roy has never accepted second best and we are trying to instil that in our players.

“We are looking to bring in quality players that are going to control a game when it is going away from you, like it did in the defeat to Manchester United on Sunday. We didn’t have that somebody to put their foot on the ball and dictate the pace of the game.

“All we are trying to do between now and Christmas is to make sure we are as high up the table as we can possibly be so we can attract that type of player.”

Bolton defender set for new deal?

Bolton Wanderers defender Martin Djetou could earn himself a new deal at the Reebok if his current form continues. The 30-year-old’s contract expires in the summer.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce said: “We will decide on Martin between now and the end of December. But, at the moment, it looks like being a definite yes. With so many players leaving [for the African Nations Cup], he could end up being first choice. And, when they come back, they might be the ones who find it difficult getting into the side.

“Martin’s had to wait patiently, because of the form of Abdoulaye Faye, and it’s been difficult for him to break into the side.

“But, when he gets the opportunity, like he did at Fulham, he shows us that, defensively, he can be the perfect cover for Abdoulaye.

“He makes a nuisance of himself, destroying the opposition and winning the ball, which is such an important job.”

“It is clear that the president wanted to fix it. They look after their interests and we do ours, but in the end we have arrived at an agreement to renew.”

Colchester United have played down speculation linking midfielder Greg Halford with a move to Manchester United.

Colchester chief executive Marie Partner told her club’s official website: “As we all know, the January transfer window is just around the corner, so the agents have obviously started work even earlier than we anticipated!

“There has been no official contact from Manchester United with regards to Greg and it is a shame that this speculation has to arise as it can often be unsettling for the player involved.”
