Spurs make late transfer swoop

Tottenham Hotspur have made a late transfer window signing by capturing midfielder Danny Murphy from Charlton Athletic. Spurs could eventually pay Charlton a fee of up to £2m.

Spurs sporting director Damien Comolli told his club’s official website: “Danny is an experienced player who is used to playing at the highest level. He has a fantastic ability to create chances and we are delighted that we have been able to bring him to the Club.

Murphy added: “Spurs has always been a club that has attracted me, but whereas previously things didn’t work out, this time they have and I am absolutely delighted. I am looking forward to playing my part in the team Martin Jol is building.”

Norwich complete Earnshaw signing

Norwich City have tonight completed the £3.5m signing of West Bromwich Albion sitrker Robert Earnshaw. The Welsh international has penned at deal at Carrow Road until 2009.

Norwich manager Nigel Worthington told his club’s official website: “He is a great capture for the football club and I’m delighted to get him.

“We needed someone of that calibre to push us on. Hopefully he will do his job and score goals and it’s up to the others to work hard and create them for him.”

Heerenveen loan for Leicester striker

Leicester City striker Mark de Vries has returned to the Netherlands joined SC Heerenveen on loan until the end of the season.

Leicester caretaker-manager Rob Kelly told his club’s official website: “After speaking to the player he indicated that he would be happy to make the move back to Holland for the loan period.

“Mark plays in the one area of the pitch in which we have got cover, and allowing him to leave could give the club the flexibility to bolster the squad in other positions.”

West Brom loan in Uruguay international

West Bromwich Albion have loaned in Defensor defender Williams Martinez for the rest of the season.

West Brom manager Bryan Robson told his club’s official website: “Williams will have three training days with us on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and I’ll have a look at him before the Blackburn game.

“You always prefer to have an experienced centre-half playing alongside a younger one but if they’re good enough, it doesn’t matter what age they are.

“Curtis Davies has shown that and if Williams is anywhere near as good as Curtis, I’ll be very happy.”
