Wigan Athletic have swooped to sign Bristol City striker Dave Cotterill for a fee of £2m. The 18-year-old has penned a three-year deal at the Premiership club.

Wigan manager Paul Jewell told his club’s official website: “He is a player we have been monitoring for some time and we have decided to act now. David is one of those players who I think has the potential to make the grade in the Premiership, which is why we have decided to take him. He is very quick but he is also very hungry to learn and has a great attitude. You can see he is also an intelligent player and hopefully he will come to fulfill his potential with Wigan Athletic.”

Cotterill added: “This is a dream come true because my ambition is to play in the Premiership. Obviously I realise the real hard work starts now, but I see this as an unbelievable opportunity for me and one that I intend to take. Wigan are an ambitious club, and this is somewhere where I think I will be given a chance. I am determined to prove to Paul Jewell that he has made the right choice.”

Wigan Athletic have loaned in Portsmouth striker Svetoslav Todorov until the end of the year.

Wigan manager Paul Jewell told his club’s official website: “I have always liked him, he’s a pure striker, he lives to put the ball in the back of the net and will hopefully bring us that predatory instinct in front of goal which we have lacked at times in the past. Harry [Redknapp] speaks ever so highly about him as a player and a person and I am really excited about bringing a player of his nature into the club.”

He added: “We have now brought in eleven new players, a whole new team and the quality we are signing speaks for itself. We are now bringing in experienced internationals, the calibre of player we could never have dreamed of attracting to Wigan Athletic even a year ago. Players are now catching onto to what we stand for as a club, that we are a serious Premiership outfit with a long future at this level. I have always said it would take time but I am satisfied that we have the players to maintain ourselves in this league for another season and look to move up to the next level.”

Chimbonda added: “I always wanted to be here. For me it is a footballing decision. Tottenham is a great club where I hope I can play my best football.

Manchester City striker signs for Portsmouth

Manchester City striker Andrew Cole has joined Portsmouth for an initial £500k fee. The former England international has put pen to paper on a two-year deal.

Cole told his new club’s official website: “It’s an opportunity for me to play for another two years and I hope to do my best for Portsmouth Football Club, score a few goals and get the club into the top ten which is what they’re aiming to do this season.”

He added: “The good thing about Fratton Park is that the fans are electric. I watched them when Arsenal came down and won, but at no stage did the fans have a moan or groan about the Portsmouth team, and they applauded Arsenal for playing so well. Things like that stick in your mind, they always get behind their team and give 100% which is always a good thing.

“I know Jamo [David James], I know Sol [Campbell] and I’ve played with David Thompson as well which is always important when you come to a new club because you can fit in straight away. I know the club are trying to push forward, buying players and trying to start something new and I want to be a part of that.”
