Charlton Athletic have recalled defender Jonathan Fortune from his loan spell at Stoke City.

Charlton manager Alan Pardew told his club’s official website: “It was important for Jon to get some games under his belt but the terms of the agreement were that we could recall him after the first month if required.

“With Souley [Souleymane Diawara] suspended and Hermann [Hreidarsson] and Madjid [Bougherra] still struggling that’s exactly what’s happened and he will bolster the squad ahead of the weekend.”

Blackburn Rovers winger David Bentley has signed a new contract at Ewood Park until 2011.

Blackburn manager Mark Hughes told his club’s official website: “David has really blossomed this season to produce a consistently high level of performance. He is a great talent with a big future and we are delighted to have signed him up for the long term.”

Blackburn Chairman John Williams added: “David is widely regarded as one of the best young footballers in the country and this represents a very significant deal for the club, underpinning our determination to continue to move forward with ambition.”

Liverpool manager on Fowler future

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is refusing to say whether striker Robbie Fowler will be given a new contract beyond the end of the season.

Benitez told his club’s official website: “He’s a really good finisher, still the best we have, and I sometimes think that if we could have [Craig] Bellamy running at defenders and carrying the ball 20 yards, then turning into Fowler with the goal in sight, it would be perfect.

“If you create chances for him, you know you can rely on his finishing and that is a very important quality to have.

“We have four very good strikers, all with different skills. You can make the most of [Peter] Crouch’s aerial ability, [Dirk] Kuyt works hard between the lines and Bellamy runs behind defences.

“Robbie operates in and around the box and, of course, he snaps up chances.

“We can talk about Robbie’s future at a later date, but if he scores every time he plays over the next few months, you never know.

“You need a regular supply of goals from someone and if Robbie is not with us next season we will have to look for another like him. It will not be easy, but it is clear we would need someone with the same qualities.”

West Brom manager on Kamara’s Middlesbrough link

West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray says he will only consider ‘ridiculous money’ for his players. This comes following speculation linking Middlesbrough with striker Diomansy Kamara.

Mowbray said: “I have always said everybody has a price and if someone wants to offer ridiculous money for any of our players it will be considered.

“He’s desperate to win games for us. You can see his joy when we win. I’ve no fears about him being distracted.”

He continued: “I’d be surprised if Middlesbrough weren’t interested.

“I am delighted when people are connected to our footballers because it shows they are doing something right.

“But we have been down this road many times. We had the same issues in the summer – and Kamara is still here scoring wonderful goals for us.

“I anticipate that being the case next year – in the Premier League hopefully.”

He added: “But I would suggest, depending on how we are, hopefully the offer will be turned down.

“It’s no good having money in the bank and no good players out on the pitch.”
