Wigan Athletic have signed Sparta Rotterdam winger Rachid Bouaouzan for an undisclosed fee.

The 23 year-old has penned a three-year deal at the JJB Stadium.

Wigan manager Chris Hutchings told his club’s official website: “It’s very useful to have a couple of Dutch lads here already, and they came into the club on their day off to speak to Rachid about us, which I was very grateful for.”

He added: “I know that he has been chased by several clubs, so I am delighted he has chosen to join us. I think that he has bags of potential and exactly what it takes to be a success in this country. It may take time for him to adjust completely and the most important thing is that he is another good young player who will add competition to the squad.”

He concluded: “He’s very quick, has got two good feet and can play on either wing. He has come highly recommended from several sources and as soon as we found out he might be available, we were very keen to get him on board.”

Bolton striker signs new contract

Bolton Wanderers striker Nicolas Anelka has signed a new four-year deal at the Reebok.

Bolton manager Sammy Lee told his club’s official website: “It is a fantastic boost for the club and our supporters that Nicolas has agreed to stay with us. We have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get him to commit his long-term future to us.

“Nicolas is one of the world’s best strikers and I am immensely proud and happy that he has shown such commitment to the club.

“It’s also a boost for the dressing room because a team never wants to lose anybody of Nicolas’ stature and presence.

“This shows our ambition to be amongst the top clubs, not just in this country but across the world of football. Nicolas is one of the most sought after strikers in the world and I am delighted that he will continue to wear the Bolton Wanderers shirt.”

Anelka added: “I seem to have been linked with every club in the country of late, but my heart is with Bolton.

“I am very happy with my form, the Club and the manager so signing a new contract was not a difficult decision.

“Hopefully we will prosper together because I would not have remained at Bolton if I’d thought we could not win trophies.”

Reading turn down West Ham’s Shorey bid

Reading have rejected a £4m bid from West Ham United for left-back Nicky Shorey.

Reading manager Steve Coppell told his club’s official website: “I can’t deny West Ham have made an offer, but I look at the price of players and I consider the offer they made as being derisory, not serious.

“It’s an offer made to put the whole issue in the public domain, an invitation to cause unrest in a way.

“I long for the days when we used to do business by phone, you talk about it, a deal’s not accepted and nobody knows.

“Now there’s a way of doing things, you make an offer in writing, it comes out and everybody knows about it. You have to respond to it.

“I think the player is happy at Reading, but speculation about your future is bound to be unsettling. I hope he’s playing for us on Saturday, let’s see.”

West Bromwich Albion have given defender Curtis Davies permission to hold transfer talks with Aston Villa.

West Brom manager Tony Mowbray told his club’s official website: “We’ve given Curtis permission to speak to Villa but the deal is not concluded and is ongoing.

“We’ll wait and see if anything gets concluded.

“The bottom line is Curtis hasn’t contributed at all for us this season and, if he goes, we’ll just get on with what we’ve been doing.”
