Birmingham City winger Daniel De Ridder has left the Championship club by mutual consent.

City manager Alex McLeish told his club’s official website: “Unfortunately for De Ridder he didn’t feature much last season but I wish him well.

“He is a good talent in terms of his ability but we are looking for something else a different type of player.

“Everybody has their own opinion but in order for me to move forward I’m going to have to make some sacrifices and he is one of those sacrifices.

“When players leave football clubs it’s important to plug the gaps.

“I am continuing to work hard with the aim of strengthening our squad with quality players.”

Brighton have re-signed defender Adam Virgo from Celtic on a free transfer.

The 25-year-old, who has penned a two-year deal, left for Parkhead in July 2005 for £1.5m, and has since had loan spells with Coventry City and Colchester United.

Virgo told Brighton’s official website: “It feels fantastic to be coming home, now I can’t wait to get started. When I knew the club and Micky were interested it was a very easy decision to make.

“There were other offers on the table, but at this stage of my career I need to be playing regular football and I feel I can achieve that with my hometown club. I also feel the Albion are a Championship club in waiting.”

Brighton manager Micky Adams added: “I’m delighted to sign a player of Adam’s quality. If he can replicate the form he showed in his first spell in an Albion shirt then we will all be very happy.”

Manchester United manager targets one signing

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he thinks he’ll only buy one player this summer.

The Scot said: “The European Championship derails transfer activity. Nothing really happens when the championships are on.

“Obviously, now that is all over, people settle down. Managers are back at their clubs and you can get some dialogue now if they are interested.

“But I wouldn’t think we would buy any more than one player. We are looking at one or two things.

“People think it’s easy to buy players nowadays. But it’s not because money plays a big part first of all.

“Clubs with ambitions don’t want to sell their best players, so it’s not as easy as you’d think and we tend to look for younger ones.”

Chelsea have completed the £8m signing of Barcelona midfielder Deco.

The 30-year-old joins the Premiership club on a two-year contract.

The Portuguese international told his new club’s official website: “It is good for me to be here and first of all I am very happy to be here.”

He continued: “I am sure I have come at the right time to do great things and be able to help Chelsea go back to the way it was and come back to being the first one, not only in England but also to win the Champions League that has been their dream for so long.

“The Premier League is a great league and it is getting better and you can see that with the Champions League Final, where you had two English teams.

“It is great that we have so many great players here at Chelsea and it is great that there is the competition which is healthy for everybody and this just makes the team better.

“To have great players in any position of the club just enhances the club.

“I know it is a new challenge but I am looking forward to it.

“I know I need a little bit of time to adapt bit but I am sure I will adapt quite well and quite fast and do my best for the team.”

He added: “I always speak with my team mates when we are together with the national team and they have always told me how great Chelsea is and how great it is to play for this team.

“But the interest for me came about before we were in the Euros, I said to them that’s great for you and Chelsea must be a great place to work with and obviously now I am very happy to be here.”

He concluded: “It was a great moment for me to win the Champions League and it was great for the team to win the Champions League.

“I know it is very important to Chelsea and I am sure it is going to be great for me to win the Champions League again with Chelsea.”
