Manchester United have signed Wigan Athletic winger Luis Antonio Valencia for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old, who has reportedly cost United £16m, has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Old Trafford.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told his club’s official website: “Antonio is a player we have admired for some time now, having spent the last two years in the Premier League with Wigan. I am sure his pace and ability will make a significant contribution to the team.”

Valencia added: “Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me. I have enjoyed my time at Wigan, but I am thrilled to have the chance to challenge for the biggest honours in club football here.

“Playing in front of 76,000 fans alongside players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs will be an amazing experience. I can’t wait to get started.”

Nottingham Forest have swooped to sign Southampton striker David McGoldrick for a seven-figure fee.

The Nottingham-born 21-year-old has penned a four-year contract at the City Ground.

Forest manager Billy Davies told his club’s official website: “I think it’s a very good signing for everyone connected with Nottingham Forest because of the quality David has and also his age.

“He’s coming away from Southampton as their leading scorer, so we’ve got someone who can certainly create and score goals. He’s someone who will only get better.

“He’s got outstanding ability and is a very difficult player to pin down on the pitch. He will bring something different to the squad.”

McGoldrick added: “I’m a Nottingham lad and I’m so happy to be back.

“I was with Southampton for five years and to get the chance to come back home where my family and friends are is a dream.

“Following Southampton’s relegation my agent told me that a few clubs were interested in me.

“But once I became aware of Forest’s interest, I told him to get me there and he’s managed to do that, which I’m very grateful for.”

Hull City manager Phil Brown says his interest in Newcastle United striker Michael Owen is ‘deadly serious’.

The 29-year-old England international is out of contract this summer and has already confirmed that he will leave St. James’ Park.

Brown told The Sun newspaper: “I have to emphasise this isn’t a publicity stunt or anything like that. We are deadly serious about bringing Michael to Hull.

“I think he’s a reasonable man and just want the opportunity to speak to him to convince him that Hull is the right place to be.

“I will be patient and we also know Michael will have a lot to consider because there is bound to be a lot of interest in his services when his contract expires at Newcastle at the end of this month.”

Liverpool have completed the signing of Portsmouth right-back Glen Johnson for an undisclosed fee.

The England international has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez told his club’s official website: “We were thinking about bringing in players with quality. He is also English and that is important for the Champions League list. We were thinking about improving the team and Johnson is a very good player who will do that.

“He was important at Chelsea and in the last year at Portsmouth he has improved and is much better. One of the main things is his mentality – it’s really good. He is a winner. I was impressed with the conversations I had with him. He wants to improve.”

He added: “We had to be quick and the club acted quickly. It was down to the player whether he chose us or [Manchester] City or Chelsea and he chose us. It was very clear from talking to him that he wanted to play for Liverpool.”
