Wigan defender pens new deal

Wigan Athletic left-back Maynor Figueroa has signed a new improved contract at the Premiership club until 2012.

The 26-year-old Honduran international had been linked with a transfer to Sunderland.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez told his club’s official website: “Maynor is a top professional, undoubtedly one of the best I have worked with in my time in the game and I am very happy that we have been able to reward him in this manner and put an end to all the silliness surrounding him in recent weeks.

“I have talked to Maynor at length, as a fellow Spanish speaker it helps that we can communicate very clearly with one another. He has never spoken to me about wanting to leave the club. He is settled here and now just wants to focus on doing well for us.

“I said all along that if we decide to sell any of our most consistent performers, it will be only when the time is right for Wigan Athletic, with that money reinvested in order to move the club to the next level.”

Arsenal youngster makes Bolton loan move

Arsenal’s highly-rated youngster Jack Wilshere has joined Bolton Wanderers on loan until the end of the season.

Earlier this week, Bolton took Manchester City’s 20-year-old winger Vladimir Weiss on loan.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle told his club’s official website: “Jack is a talented, young, hungry player who I think has got a bright future ahead of him. He has got an abundance of quality and he will enhance our squad.

“It is similar to the deal with Vladimir Weiss in terms of the belief that I can help the player and the player can help this football club.

“The deals suit all parties concerned if the boys go and deliver on the pitch.”

Middlesbrough in Celtic loan raid for McManus

Middlesbrough manager Gordan Strachan has raided former club Celtic to bring centre-back Stephen McManus to the Riverside.

The 27-year-old Scottish international will stay with the Championship club on loan until the summer.

Strachan told his club’s official website: “We’re delighted to have Stephen join us. He has achieved a lot in his career, winning trophies, playing in the Champions League and captaining club and country.

“I think the world of Stephen as a player and as a man. He’s a leader and an organiser and will be a great asset to the club.”

Leeds loan for Birmingham’s McSheffrey

Leeds United have swooped to loan in Birmingham City forward Gary McSheffrey for the rest of the season.

United manager Simon Grayson told his club’s official website: “Gary brings plenty of experience and he is a good signing.

“He’s coming from the Premier League to League One and he will add quality to the squad.

“He is a threat, he can play a number of positions, and we’re delighted to have him here.”
