Motherwell defender pens new deal

Motherwell left-back Steven Hammell is hoping to add to his 334 appearances for the Scottish Premiership club after putting pen to paper on a new two-year contract.

Hammell told his club’s official website: “I am delighted to have things sorted out; I’ve been discussing my own situation for a while now and it’s a relief to know everyone has been tied up.

“There’s quite a few of the boys out of contract here and hopefully I’ll be the first of many to stay on for a while yet. We’ve done fairly well this season so if we can keep the core of the squad together then who knows where we can go.

“For me personally, I just want to continue to keep on doing my best for the club. Someone was just asking me about my appearance total for Motherwell and now that I am here for another two years, hopefully I can add a few to that.”

Manchester United winger signs new contract

Manchester United winger Nani has a signed a new four-year deal at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese international joined the Premiership club from Sporting in July 2007 for an undisclosed fee.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told his club’s official website: “Nani is an emerging talent within the team and has developed tremendously since joining the club.

“We are delighted he has signed a new contract and I am sure he will have a long and successful future here at Manchester United.”

The player added: “I am delighted to have signed a new contract. It has been like a dream come true to play for Manchester United.

“The coaching staff have taught me so much about the game and I’m playing alongside some of the best players in the world.

“I’m looking forward to winning many more trophies with this team.”

Plymouth loan in West Ham defender

Plymouth Argyle have completed the loan signing of West Ham United defender Bondz N’Gala for a month.

The 20-year-old centre-half has already had loan spells with Weymouth and Scunthorpe United.

Plymouth manager Paul Mariner told his club’s official website: “N’Ggala’s a very, very strong defender. He’s not an archetypal Championship defender – he’s got more ability than that – but he’s an uncompromising defender who likes to defend.”

Wolves giant makes Bristol City loan switch

Wolverhampton Wanderer’s giant striker Stefan Maierhofer has gone on a one-month’s loan to Bristol City.

The 27-year-old, who is six foot and seven and half inches tall, has made just nine appearances for Wolves since joining from SK Rapid Wien last summer.

City manager Gary Johnson told his club’s official website: “We knew signing Stefan was an option available to us if Chris Iwelumo decided to return to Wolves.

“Stefan’s a big forward with a very good CV. He’s played a few games for Wolves to get used to the country.

“He comes highly recommended from [Wolves manager] Mick [McCarthy] and is a different type of player to that we already have in the squad.”
