One-year deal for Manchester United veteran

Manchester United’s veteran defender Gary Neville has extended his contract at Old Trafford until next summer.

The 35-year old has made 27 appearances this season after spending 18 months on the sidelines due to injury.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told his club’s official website: “We’ve agreed a contract with Gary Neville for another year. We’ve been working on it for a couple of weeks now.

“We’re delighted with that. We think he deserves it because his contribution to the club has been fantastic. As I’ve said time and again about certain players, they make a career out of their will and determination to do it. Gary is one of those players.”

Liverpool sign Charlton’s Shelvey

Liverpool have made their first summer signing with the acquisition of Charlton Athletic youngster Jonjo Shelvey.

The Premiership club have paid an initial £1.7m fee for the England Under-17 international.

Liverpool’s managing director, Christian Purslow, told his club’s official website: “Jonjo is an exciting young England international. His signing is part of our long-term strategic recruitment plan and we all look forward to welcoming him to Melwood.”

Manchester United agree to sign Mexican striker

Manchester United have agreed to sign striker Javier Hernandez from Chivas de Guadalajara for an undisclosed fee.

The move is subject to the Mexican international obtaining a work permit.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told his club’s official website: “I am delighted to reach agreement with Chivas to bring such an exciting young striker, who has been in such prolific form for both his club and his country. He will be a great addition to our squad and we look forward to welcoming our first Mexican player in the summer.”

Liverpool sign young Swindon ‘keeper

Liverpool have swooped to sign Swindon Town youngster Jamie Stephens for an undisclosed fee.

The 16-year old joins the Anfield club on a two-year deal and will become professional when the ‘keeper turns 17 in August.

Stephens told his new club’s official website: “The Academy is unbelievable. They have so many staff, everyone is so polite, and kind, it’s really friendly, like a family club.”

Swindon chairman Andrew Fitton told his own club’s website: “This is a great opportunity for Jamie. [Town's goalkeeping coach] George Wood recognised his talent immediately and did a great job developing him.

“Being such a specialist position, the opportunity to go to an Academy like Liverpool is the right move for him and will give him the chance to play in tournaments all over the world.”

He added: “I hope that one day Jamie Stephens may come back to Swindon, maybe on loan from Liverpool, and get his first taste of league football at The County Ground.”
