Fulham beat off competition from a Premier League rival to sign FC Twente striker Bryan Ruiz for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old Costa Rican international put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Craven Cottage.

Fulham manager Martin Jol told his club’s official website: “Bryan Ruiz was always our intended target. He is a player who continues to attract interest from other top clubs so naturally I’m very happy, on this final day of the transfer window, that he has decided to join Fulham.”

Ruiz said: “I’m really happy to be joining Fulham Football Club and playing under Martin Jol who is a manager I admire from his time managing in Holland for Ajax. I chose to come to Fulham because it feels more personal than other clubs I have visited.

“I’m looking forward to meeting up with the whole squad when most of the players return from the international break and getting to work straight away with the team in preparation for some important fixtures.”

“It has always been an ambition for me to play in the Premier League and I am looking forward to an exciting new chapter in my career with Fulham.”

Gera makes West Brom return

Hungarian midfielder Zoltan Gera has completed his move back to West Bromwich Albion after leaving Fulham on a Bosman free transfer.

The 32-year-old originally joined West Brom from Ferencvaros in July 2004 for £1.5m, but left the Hawthorns for Fulham in June 2008 on a Bosman.

West Brom manager Roy Hodgson told his club’s official website: “Having decided not to renew his contract at Fulham Zoltan has come back to the club where he started his career in England.

“The last time he played at West Bromwich Albion he was a very popular figure with everyone at the club, not least of all the fans.

“I of course know him well and admired him in the two years we worked together at Fulham, where he was an integral part of the team that did well during those years.

“I think it is a massive coup for the club that we have been able to persuade him to come back to West Brom despite the many other offers he had, because he is a player that is widely appreciated in the Premier League and abroad.

“I think it is an excellent signing and he is a player I hope will do as well in the coming seasons as he has done in the past seasons with West Brom and Fulham.

“In Zoltan Gera we’ve acquired not only a first-class player but a first-class person and we think that’s also important to the way we want the club to move forward.”

Ipswich make double swoop

Ipswich Town have today made a double swoop by taking Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and David Stockdale from Arsenal and Fulham respectively.

Emmanuel-Thomas, a midfielder, joins on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee, while ‘keeper Stockdale comes on a season’s loan.

20-year-old Emmanuel-Thomas told his new club’s official website: “Obviously it came to the stage in my career at Arsenal where I needed to be playing games. I had a decision to make and Ipswich seemed the right place for me.

“I had a good time at Arsenal and I’m going to miss all the boys but my future is about me and I needed to move on.

“I was impressed with what [Ipswich manager] Paul Jewell had to say – and the team he is building. I know he is looking to bring in more players and it is the club’s ambition to get in the Premier League. That’s my goal as well, to play in the Premier League with Ipswich.”

25-year-old Stockdale said: “I had a great talk with the gaffer here and Ipswich Town is a big club so I was eager to come here.

“The manager told me about the quality of the signings he’s made and where they’re heading and everything he told me made me keen to join the club.

“Now I’m just looking forward to getting going and playing my part in what I hope will be a successful season for Ipswich.”
