Portsmouth have completed the signing of Derby County striker Luke Varney for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old, who spent last season loan with Blackpool, has penned a three-year contract at Fratton Park.

Varney told his new club’s official website: “I’m delighted to be here. Sometimes contracts can drag on through the pre-season, so it important for me to be sorted early on.

“It’s really exciting for me to get to training, meet the boys and push on through pre-season.

“Once I heard that Portsmouth were interested, it was something that I couldn’t turn down.

“It’s exciting times at the club, people I’ve spoken to have told that it’s a club that’s going places and it’s something I’m really looking forward to it.

“With my wife, we’d said all along that we wanted something a bit more secure and with a little one on the way, it makes it that bit more important to have that security.

“Relegation always affects a club, but at one stage last season I thought Portsmouth really looked like they were going to go up, although obviously the strength in depth wasn’t there.

“But I know the manager is working hard in that area and hopefully I’ll be one of a few good signings.”

On Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill, he said: “I think even from my days at Crewe, he’s been one of those managers that I’ve thought I wouldn’t mind working under. He’s very motivational and he’ll speak his mind, which I think is very important in football.

“I’m the sort of lad who wants to know that I’m wanted – and I’m know he’ll do that, but I’m sure if I’m in the wrong, then he’ll let me know and I’ll have no problem with that either because it’s good to hear that too.

“I’m really looking forward to working with him and repaying the faith he’s shown in me by signing me.”

Portsmouth have completed the loan signing of Swansea City winger Dave Cotterill. The ex-Wigan Athletic player joins Pompey for a month.

The Championship club currently lie 18th in the league, four points above the relegation zone.

The 23-year-old told Portsmouth’s official website: “Hopefully I can get a few games and help the side move up the league – I want to help as much as I can.

“I’m direct in my play. I like to get crosses and shots in, so hopefully I can be a threat going forward.

“There are quality players here who have played in the Premier League and I think we should be looking higher up the table.

“They’re a great set of lads. I’m sure it will take me a few days to settle in fully but everything’s going well so far.

“Five of our next seven games are at home, so we should be looking to get some points on the board.”

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara could be leaving the North London club this summer.

O’Hara said: “I went back to Tottenham in January and I was not really involved so I may have to move on.
